Enjoy unforgettable moments on Port wine tours

Port is a national Portuguese drink which is ubiquitous across the country. And, of course, it’s the most popular in its home, Porto. The city is situated in the very heart of the country, and hence, it is the ideal starting point for Portugal wine tours. For this reason, Gourmet Wine Travel has also chosen Porto as the place to begin wine tours from.

Before you start wine tasting in Porto, you should know some information about Port wine. The drink can only be called Port wine if it came from Douro Valley, and it has nothing to do with the grapes used for Port but what happens after they get picked. Collecting of grapes is done by hands and then baskets with grapes get transported to the wineries. There, they get carefully inspected by winemakers, and then placed in wide treading tanks for separating juice and pulp from skin. Nowadays, Port wine is usually held in steel vats and is fermented for 3-8 days only. To stop the fermentation process, moonshine or 20% brandy is added. After that, the wine is bottled and ready to drink. Port wine does not contain sugar, but it’s still very sweet because of the sweetness of the grapes. Each grape variety has its own character such as delicate floral scents, intense flavors of woodland fruit, exotic spicy notes or wild aromas of gum cistus. They all work together to create a complex and multidimensional harmony. Our program includes the Douro wine tour, so you have a chance to see the birthplace of Port wine with your own eyes and also visit a couple of local wineries.
